These drugs act by slowing the heart and making the heart more efficient. They are used in the treatment of angina and high blood pressure. They can also control some heart rhythm disturbances. They have been shown to reduce the risk of heart attacks.  Beta blockers improve the outlook of patients with heart muscle damaged as the result of a heart attack. They are rarely used in asthmatics as they may make this worse. The possible side effects include tiredness and cold hands and feet.
