Heart Disease - an overview

Cardiovascular disease includes several sorts of heart disease. The most common cause of cardiovascular disease in England and indeed London is disease of the heart arteries. Disease affecting these coronary arteries is known as coronary heart disease. Sometimes it is referred to as ischaemic heart disease. Heart disease remains a major cause of death and disability nationally in Great Britain and more locally London and Hertfordshire.

Cardiovascular disease can affect patients in several ways. Most commonly it causes angina and heart attacks – myocardial infarction. Disease of the coronary arteries can also cause heart failure and sometimes heart rhythm disturbances such as atrial fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia.

The aim of my website is to provide both the general public and general practitioners with information about several common varieties of heart disease.

In addition to explaining aspects of heart disease the website contains information about tests such as the stress test and cardiac catheterisation frequently used by cardiologists to investigate patients with known or suspected heart disease.

I also explain treatments such as the use of stents in cardiovascular disease.

There are also some videos to provide information about procedures

I hope that you find the information helpful.
